Career Wardrobe Expert Advice

The Career Wardrobe volunteers from around the Philadelphia region share their top tips!

Veronica Ryan is a marketing and communications professional, and is employed as Marketing Manager with The Haverford Trust Company.

Be prepared to ask good questions…
At the end of most interviews you will be asked, “So, do you have any questions for us?” Be ready to answer this question – it can help you end strong! How do you begin formulating a good question? Start with the company’s website. Never ask questions that were already answered on the internet. For example, don’t ask how long the firm has been in business, you should have found that out before stepping foot in their door. Instead ask about a new product or service that you read about on their site. Or reference their recent news clippings and ask questions about the topic of that story. Show them you are not lazy and prove that you took it upon yourself to research the organization. It will set you apart from other candidates.

Represent yourself truthfully…
Job seekers are in the business of selling themselves to prospective employers. You may feel that to sell yourself you need to tell a little white lie about your skills or experience. Don’t do it! Even if you feel like you “practically ran” your last company, don’t stretch the truth! Most companies will check your references and the truth will come out, so be honest on your resume and in interviews. Lying will jeopardize all job opportunities within that company. Plus, hiring managers do talk to each other and you may get a bad reputation with other companies through word-of-mouth before you even apply. Honesty really is the best policy.
